Grand Prismatic Spring

Grand Prismatic Spring, Yellowstone National Park.  This hot spring is the largest in the United States {about 250 feet by 300 feet} and emits 560 gallons of water per minute.  Getting the shot required hiking a narrow path up a mountain, a secret passed onto me by a fellow traveler.

Wow, that is just downright amazing! Are the colors always like that, and how are they created?

Hi, I’m no scientist but this is what wikipedia says: ” The vivid colors in the spring are the result of pigmented bacteria in the microbial mats that grow around the edges of the mineral-rich water.”
